Deirdre is nervous. She's been trying to choose healthier foods so that she can look and feel better, but coming to a party makes her nervous. Looking over to the buffet, she spies pizza and wings - two of her favourite foods. There's also a dessert table with the most amazing chocolate cake!
"I'm not allowed to have those foods", thinks Deirdre, feeling instantly deprived.
She wanders around the room, stewing and feeling sorry for herself. All her friends are there, laughing and having a great time.
She's certain they aren't worrying about what they're eating. They get to have whatever they want.
Deirdre's FOMO eventually wins and she grabs two slices of pizza.
As she eats, guilt starts to creep up and she feels like she's blown it on her goals. Now that she's veered "off plan", Deirdre figures she may as well go all in.
She picks up another couple slices of pizza, a few wings and tops it all off with a piece of chocolate cake. Resigned to getting "back on track" tomorrow, Deirdre eats as quickly as possible without really enjoying anything.Even as she's driving home, Deirdre starts to feel shame and regret.
She's certain she's ruined all her progress once again and will never make meaningful progress towards her goals.
Reasoning with herself that tonight’s a write off anyway, Deirdre pulls into a drive thru and orders a burger and fries to go.

Emily is at the same party. She's been working with a coach to create a better relationship with food and lose some weight. Together they've talked about what to expect tonight and come up with a plan that Emily is confident she can execute.
As she scans the food table, she evaluates her options.
Although she also enjoys pizza and wings, she chooses not to have those tonight, instead opting for grilled chicken skewers and some cut up veggies.
Emily's choice makes her feel like she's in control.
Although there's a bit of discomfort about choosing not to indulge in some of her favourite foods, she remembers her long term goals and is proud of sticking to her plan.
Emily enjoys the evening with her friends, focusing on their company rather than being fixated on food.
As she makes her way home, Emily texts her coach, sharing how amazing it feels to enjoy an evening out with friends and stay true to her long-term goals.
Her confidence in herself and what she can accomplish is growing daily.
